Sammy promised to be good and not to watch anything scary on TV. “You’re too little to stay here by yourself.” ![]() “Why?” he said, getting all twisty and limp boned again. Then I waited for a moment before I shook my head and said, “Naah, forget it. “Really? D’ya think he’d land right on the roof?” “Yeah, Dad’s gonna do a low flyby and wave to us-maybe even set down and pick us up to take us with him to the ice field.” Of course, if you come, you’ll miss Dad flying by.” His face got all twisted, and his body all limp boned. The last thing I needed was Sammy along as a third wheel. I figured this might be about his apology and about us making up. The look on Rav’s face said that Sammy wasn’t invited. Then Sammy, who had snuck up right behind me, asked, “Can I come, too?” I know it’s late, but do you think you can get out?” As a matter of fact, things are totally right.” He gave a weird little laugh then he said, “There’s something I want to show you. As much as I wanted to make him suffer, I couldn’t. “No, you shouldn’t have,” I said, pretending I wasn’t ready to accept his apology, even though I was. I folded my arms and leaned against the door frame. Since Rav rarely apologized for anything, I decided to milk it. ![]() “I shouldn’t have acted the way I did to you.” ![]() ![]() But the thugs prove untraceable even as the roster of suspects expands. So when Brother and Sister Bear, along with their neighbors, put together a Father's Day celebrating at a local restaurant and surprise Papa Bear, he's thrilled. Of course, he ends up succumbing to his human (er, bear?) nature and, you know, having those little things we like to call "feelings" and winds up disappointed that his family so easily complied with his anti-Father's Day spiel. So while he thinks mother's day is a great idea, his ingrained sexism leads him to insist that the idea of a day dedicated to celebrating fathers' familial contributions is ridiculous and purely commercial. He's clearly one of the many men who suffer from the belief that there's something inherently unmasculine about having any feelings whatsoever. Its Fathers Day, and Papa thinks that Mama and the cubs have forgotten all about it. a less emotionally enlightened upbringing, let's call it. ![]() ![]() ![]() There are obviously many parallels with other stories here, as well as various ethical thought experiments in moral philosophy. ![]() ![]() It’s much better to people like Old Man Warner that one person be chosen at random (so the process is ‘fair’) and sacrificed for the collective health of the community. People will die if the lottery is not drawn, because the crops will fail and people will starve as a result. To give up the lottery would, in the words of Old Man Warner, be the behaviour of ‘crazy fools’, because he is convinced that the lottery is not only beneficial but essential to the success of the village’s crops. We may scoff at the Carthaginians sacrificing their children to the gods or the Aztecs doing similar, but Jackson’s point is that every age and every culture has its own illogical and even harmful traditions, which are obeyed in the name of ‘tradition’ and in the superstitious belief that they have a beneficial effect. ![]() ![]() ![]() Rental, The Fixer Upper, Deep Dish, Blue Christmas, Savannah Breeze, MARY KAY ANDREWS is the New York Times bestselling author of Summer ![]() Even if there are people determined to keep Annajane from getting what she wants, happiness might be hers for the taking, and the life she once had with Mason in this sleepy lake town might be in her future. ![]() On the peaceful surface of Hideaway Lake, Annajane discovers that the past is never really gone. Nova is a member of the supervillain group known as Anarchists, the remnants of the followers of the world’s greatest supervillain, Ace Anarchy, who has been living in hiding since the end of the Age of Anarchy, close to death. After a period of superpowered destruction and terror known as the Age of Anarchy, the world has entered a time of peace, thanks to the superhero collective known as the Renegades. For those of you unfamiliar with the series, the Renegades books follow the adventures of two teenagers, Nova and Adrian, in an alternate version of Earth where a number of people, known as prodigies, have superpowers. Archenemies had to be one of my favourite young adult books of last year, so I was pretty eager to check out the final book in the series. Supernova is the third and final book in Meyer’s Renegades trilogy, which started in 2017 with Renegade and continued last year with the incredible Archenemies. Lies, betrayal, anarchy!
